Everything that rises must converge

For class the other day we were assigned to read a story called "Everything that rises must Converge".  The characters in this passage are Julian, who is in his mid-twenties and has just recently graduated from college, but still living with his mother.  His mother is another important character, she comes off as old fashioned and persnickety.  It starts off with Julian talking about how the doctor has insisted for his mother to go to workout classes because she is over weight. The only way to get to these classes are by the bus and Julian's mother  refuses to ride the bus alone because of what neighborhood they live in.  Julian ends up riding the bus with her and on the bus his mother can't really keep her mouth quiet.  They get into arguments about race, and just to spite his mother Julian sits next to a African American man and tries to have a conversation. Every once in a while Julian will have a time where he goes into this bubble and daydreams of different life scenarios. A woman and her baby had come onto the bus and as any elder woman would do she started kind of playing around with the child because she thought he was adorable. When it was their turn to get off the bus the lady with the baby got off as well, Julian's mother likes to give money to little kids so she thought it would be a nice gesture to give this child some money.  The mother took this gesture as rude and ended up smacking Julian's mother with her purse. In such an uproar Julian's mother takes off; she gets herself all worked up and ends up falling on the pavement. The story leaves us with the thought that she passed but you never really know.
