Just Class

The other day in class, we had class in the Communication room of the library.  We learned how to use the school website to our advantage, and found good resources that could help with writing our rough drafts.  So far I'm not really sure which story I'm going to use when writing my draft.  I find it a little hard to connect with these characters, because they're all alittle crazy.  I have a tendency to wait till the last moment to write a paper, writing is not my forte.  BUT i'm determined to start soon:) We also talked about the story Hills Like White Elephants. Just by reading the the title I started off a little puzzled.  But once again the title has absolutely nothing to do with the script.  It had to do with getting an abortion, this couple was deciding whether or not a baby was the right decision for them.  At the end it just left me hanging, who know what happenes with the unborn child!

Everything that rises must converge

For class the other day we were assigned to read a story called "Everything that rises must Converge".  The characters in this passage are Julian, who is in his mid-twenties and has just recently graduated from college, but still living with his mother.  His mother is another important character, she comes off as old fashioned and persnickety.  It starts off with Julian talking about how the doctor has insisted for his mother to go to workout classes because she is over weight. The only way to get to these classes are by the bus and Julian's mother  refuses to ride the bus alone because of what neighborhood they live in.  Julian ends up riding the bus with her and on the bus his mother can't really keep her mouth quiet.  They get into arguments about race, and just to spite his mother Julian sits next to a African American man and tries to have a conversation. Every once in a while Julian will have a time where he goes into this bubble and daydreams of different life scenarios. A woman and her baby had come onto the bus and as any elder woman would do she started kind of playing around with the child because she thought he was adorable. When it was their turn to get off the bus the lady with the baby got off as well, Julian's mother likes to give money to little kids so she thought it would be a nice gesture to give this child some money.  The mother took this gesture as rude and ended up smacking Julian's mother with her purse. In such an uproar Julian's mother takes off; she gets herself all worked up and ends up falling on the pavement. The story leaves us with the thought that she passed but you never really know.

The Yellow Wallpaper

Reading between the lines is not exactly my forte, so when I was reading the short story I would find myself becoming confused quite often.  The other day in class we discussed the story in more depth, which really helped; it kind of helped put all the missing pieces together.

The two main characters in the book are John who is the husband of the woman, but her name is never mentioned.  There are more characters than the two but there not as important.
The wife proclaims to be ill, but never really comes out about her issues.  The couple decides to stay in this abandon little house not far from the road, just a temporary stay.

John is a physician and proclaims to know what’s best, so his demands are for her to stay in her room at all times.  She shall not lift a finger or even move an inch, because John and his sister Jane handle it all.  Stuck in this room with an oddly yellow wallpaper starts to get to her head and this wallpaper begins to run her life.

At the end of the story things turned odd, but luckily went we went over in class I was able to understand more of the scenario.
